Five steps before you delegate

1. Confirm custody of your SOL

   Delegation requires SOL in a self-custody wallet you control. Exchange-held balances may need to be withdrawn first. Understand where your tokens sit before researching validators.

2. Learn epoch basics

3. Build a validator checklist

   Compare validators on uptime, skip rate, commission, and identity transparency. Avoid sorting by commission alone. Our workshop includes a printed worksheet for this step.

4. Decide your delegation amount

   Many holders keep a portion unstaked for flexibility. Consider your liquidity needs and how actively you want to monitor rewards over the coming months.

5. Delegate and mark your calendar

   After delegating, note the epoch when activation is expected. Review validator performance after a few cycles rather than checking daily.

Term	Plain meaning
Epoch	A network time period when staking changes take effect and rewards are calculated.
Commission	The percentage of inflation rewards a validator keeps before distributing the rest to delegators.
Vote account	The on-chain address where your delegated stake is assigned.
Skip rate	How often a validator misses voting on ledger progress — higher skips can reduce rewards.
Cooldown	The waiting period after unstaking before SOL becomes available in your wallet.
